Cuttack, June 10: In a joint operation, the Drug Control Department and the Excise Department conducted surprise raids on multiple medicine shops in Cuttack for allegedly selling Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) kits and abortion drugs without valid prescriptions.

The raids targeted two shops in Ranihat and one in Arunoday Market. According to officials, several irregularities were uncovered during the inspections. In one instance, a pharmacy failed to maintain any record of buyers in its register. Investigators also found discrepancies in the stock records of some shops.

Deputy Drug Controller Dharmadev Puhan, who oversaw the operation, stated that the raids were part of routine inspections and were not prompted by any specific complaint. He further added that strict action will be taken against the violators and that similar surprise checks will continue in the coming days.

This crackdown follows similar raids conducted in Bhubaneswar two days ago, as authorities step up efforts to curb the illegal sale of prescription-only medication.
