Ukrainian drones strike Russian capital during parliamentary election voting
Hundreds of unmanned aerial vehicles struck the Russian capital and surrounding areas on Sunday, killing at least two residents and damaging a vital oil refinery. This large-scale military operation unfolded on the final day of parliamentary elections, which are tightly controlled by the Kremlin. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that air defenses intercepted more than 1,600 incoming aerial threats across various regions. Out of those intercepted craft, 450 specifically targeted Moscow.
Sobyanin accused Ukrainian forces of trying to interfere with the three-day voting process designed to consolidate President Vladimir Putin’s 26-year grip on political power. Regional Governor Andrey Vorobyov reported that a 44-year-old woman and an elderly man lost their lives in two distinct locations. Emergency responders evacuated 400 residents from a 21-storey apartment building after a crashing craft ignited a fierce fire on the premises.
Striking energy infrastructure remains a core strategy for Kyiv as the military conflict extends into its fifth year. By hitting oil facilities, Ukraine aims to cut off financial resources that fund Russian military operations. President Volodymyr Zelensky celebrated the recent strikes on social media. He stated that hitting logistics and oil facilities destroys billions of dollars that sustain the enemy war machine. The Moscow Oil Refinery, which sustained structural damage in this latest wave, had already suffered previous hits in recent months.
Recent international discussions highlighted potential de-escalation regarding energy targets. Former US President Donald Trump recently claimed that both nations agreed to stop attacking each other's energy sectors. However, these latest refinery strikes suggest that long-range infrastructure warfare continues unabated. In a separate incident, authorities in the occupied southern Kherson region reported that an aerial strike hit a local bus. This explosion killed two people, including an electoral commission member.
