New Delhi, August 6: The Supreme Court has asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) to submit a detailed response by August 9 regarding the deletion of around 65 lakh voters from Bihar’s draft electoral roll, released on August 1 as part of a Special Intensive Revision.

The petition, filed by advocates Prashant Bhushan and Neha Rathi, claims that while reasons like death, migration, and duplication were cited, the draft roll doesn’t specify deletions constituency- or booth-wise. They requested detailed lists explaining why each name was removed.

Citing Darbhanga and Kaimur districts, the petition highlights that over 10% of voters were marked "not recommended by BLOs." Bhushan argued the ECI holds detailed data but failed to disclose reasons for deletions, risking disenfranchisement for those removed without explanation.

The matter will be heard on August 12.
