New Delhi, August 14: The Supreme Court on Thursday brought closure to a long-standing marital dispute by dissolving the marriage of an estranged couple and directing the husband to pay a lump sum of ₹1.25 crore as permanent alimony to his former wife.
The judgment was delivered by a division bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta, who observed that the couple had been living separately for over 14 years. According to court records, the husband entered into a second marriage in March 2017 while the matrimonial dispute with his first wife was still unresolved.
"We see no purpose in continuing the legal relationship between the parties. The marriage has irretrievably broken down," the bench remarked, underlining that the prolonged separation, coupled with the husband’s remarriage, had rendered any possibility of reconciliation unrealistic.
The court's decision to grant dissolution was taken under its extraordinary powers to do complete justice between the parties. The ₹1.25 crore permanent alimony, as ordered by the bench, is intended to provide the wife with long-term financial security and to settle all pending claims once and for all.
This ruling not only brings finality to the couple’s prolonged legal battle but also reaffirms the Supreme Court’s approach in cases where marriages have completely broken down, with no chance of revival.
