Iconic SUV returns with modern tech and rugged styling

January 26 marks a significant date for the Indian automobile industry as the much-awaited 2026 Renault Duster is officially unveiled today. This event signals the grand return of a nameplate that originally defined the mid-size SUV segment in India back in 2012. After being discontinued in 2022 due to falling sales, the French automaker is betting big on this new generation to regain its market share.

A Tough Road Ahead

While the original Duster was a trendsetter, the landscape has changed drastically. The 2026 Renault Duster enters a highly competitive arena dominated by the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. The segment now also features heavyweights like the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, and the Honda Elevate.

For Renault, this launch is critical. The company has seen a dip in sales with its current lineup of Kwid, Triber, and Kiger. Industry data shows a drop in Renault's volume from over 92,000 units in FY21 to just under 38,000 in FY25. The new Duster is expected to be the volume driver the brand desperately needs.

Design and Platform Upgrades

Built on the global CMF-B platform, the new SUV promises better safety and ride comfort. In terms of design, buyers can expect a more muscular and "boxy" look. The exterior will likely feature a bolder grille, chunky body cladding, and sharp LED headlamps, giving it a true off-roader stance.

Interior and Tech

Inside the cabin, the 2026 Renault Duster will offer a premium experience compared to its predecessor. Expectations include a large touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a digital instrument cluster. Comfort features like ventilated seats and wireless charging are also likely to be part of the package.

Engine and Expected Price

Under the hood, Renault is expected to offer turbo-petrol engine options paired with both manual and automatic transmissions. While a diesel option is unlikely, the performance is expected to be peppy and suited for Indian roads.

Market experts predict the pricing to fall between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 19 lakh (ex-showroom). Following today's unveiling, the official market launch is anticipated by March 2026.
