Bhubaneswar, Oct 31: In a major step towards transparency and digital governance, the Odisha government will soon install QR code scanners on all major roads across the state. The initiative, inspired by a proposal from Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, will allow citizens to access complete information about roads and contractors with just a scan.

Odisha Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Prithviraj Harichandan announced that the system will be implemented not only on national highways but also on state highways and other key routes. “People will be able to know who built the road, how long the construction took, and the total project cost- all through a simple QR code scan,” the minister said.

The move aims to ensure greater accountability among contractors and enhance public monitoring of infrastructure projects.

In another green initiative, the PWD has decided to spend 1% of the total road construction cost on tree plantation and maintenance. The fund will be used for developing green corridors along newly built and existing roads under the department’s jurisdiction.

“All new state highways, district roads, and other PWD projects will include tree plantation along both sides of the road,” Harichandan added, emphasizing the department’s commitment to sustainable development.

With these measures, Odisha looks set to become a model for transparent and eco-friendly road infrastructure in the country.
