Keonjhar, Feb 27: A tragic incident occurred in Odisha’s Keonjhar district early on Friday morning when a one-year-old elephant calf fell into an open well and lost its life. The incident took place at Kathabaunshuli village under the Sadar forest range, around 3 am.

Reports suggest that a herd of approximately 10 elephants was crossing the area near the village when the young calf accidentally slipped into a well belonging to Mohan Charan Mohanta. The rest of the herd attempted to rescue the calf, but during their efforts, stones from the upper portion of the well came loose and fell, striking the calf on its head. The force of the impact is believed to have caused the calf’s death.

Upon being alerted, Forest Department officials arrived at the site and recovered the calf’s carcass from the well. The body was then sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Following the completion of the necessary formalities, the carcass will be buried at the Padmapur nursery. The incident has left locals and wildlife enthusiasts saddened, as the loss of the young elephant calf is a reminder of the ongoing human-wildlife conflict and the importance of safeguarding wildlife habitats.
