Bhubaneswar, May 13: In a heart-wrenching yet inspiring story, a six-year-old boy from Baripada, has become a symbol of hope and humanity after donating his organs and saving two lives following a tragic accident.
Sparshreyan Patra, the son of Srikrishna Patra and Swagatika Sahoo from the Murgabadi area of Baripada, was critically injured on May 6 when a heavy iron gate weighing nearly 3 quintals fell on his head. He was immediately taken to Balasore Hospital and later shifted to SUM Ultimate Medicare Hospital in Bhubaneswar for advanced treatment.
Despite all medical efforts, Sparshreyan sustained severe head trauma.
According to Dr. Alok Kumar Panigrahi, Senior Consultant in Critical Care Medicine, repeated tests confirmed that the child had suffered irreversible brain damage and was declared brain-dead.
While grappling with their unimaginable loss, Sparshreyan’s parents made a courageous decision is to donate his organs. Their consent allowed doctors to proceed with the retrieval of both kidneys, which were subsequently sent to AIIMS Bhubaneswar and a private hospital, where two patients received life-saving transplants.
Dr. Somanath, Senior Consultant in Neurosurgery described the gesture as a profound act of humanity, saying, “Though Sparshreyan could not be saved, his organs have brought life to others. He is truly eternal now.”
This is the fourth organ donation case handled by SUM Ultimate Medicare in the last two years.
The selfless act has drawn praise from across the state. Prof. (Dr.) Manojranjan Nayak, Chairman of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA), lauded the hospital’s efforts in promoting awareness about organ donation. “Noble acts like these must be recognized and shared widely so that more people understand the life-saving potential of organ donation,” he said.
Sparshreyan’s story is a poignant reminder that even the smallest among us can leave behind the biggest legacy. In death, this six-year-old child gave others a new lease on life—becoming, in every sense, a true hero.
