Bhubaneswar, March 10: Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singhdeo today chaired a review meeting on the 1000 MW Pumped Storage Project (PSP) in the state.
The meeting, which was held to discuss the progress of the project, follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Odisha Government and Telangana’s Sangamam Power Project Company at the Utkarsha Odisha Conclave 2025.
Singhdeo reaffirmed Odisha’s dedication to the promotion and utilization of green energy, in line with the vision outlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a clean fuel future.
He emphasized that the state’s abundant natural resources offer significant potential for renewable energy production, and efforts are being made to tap into these resources effectively.
Singhdeo noted that the importance of Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) cannot be overstated in the context of renewable energy, particularly because they help address the challenges of intermittency in power generation.
As part of ongoing efforts to develop such projects, the state has already identified 45 potential locations for PSP development. Of these, 10 projects are planned to be executed by various Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) under the government’s supervision.
Additionally, private companies have been encouraged to explore further possibilities, with certain sites being offered on a first-come, first-served basis. This approach is designed to accelerate the development of PSPs and further cement Odisha’s commitment to a sustainable energy future.
The 1000 MW Sunki PSP Project
A key highlight of the meeting was the detailed discussion surrounding the 1000 MW Pumped Storage Project at Sunki in the Koraput district, proposed by the Sangamam Power Project Company. The company has already prepared a comprehensive project report, which outlines the capacity to generate 1000 MW of electricity for up to 6 hours a day during peak demand periods, using reverse turbine technology.
The officials from Sangamam Power Company requested support from the Odisha Government in terms of providing single-window clearance and offering necessary incentives to ensure the smooth implementation of the project.
Singhdeo assured the company and other stakeholders that the Odisha Government is committed to providing a conducive environment for the timely execution of such projects.
