New Delhi, Aug 24: India’s renowned opening batter Shikhar Dhawan has officially announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, including both international and domestic competitions.
In a video posted on his social media, Dhawan revealed his decision, stating, “My primary goal was always to play for India, and I achieved it with the support of many. I want to thank my family, my childhood coaches Tarak Sinha and Madan Sharma, who guided me in my cricketing journey. I also owe gratitude to my teammates, who became like family, and to all the fans for their love and support. As the saying goes, to progress in the story, one must turn the page. I am now turning my page and announcing my retirement.”
Dhawan expressed his contentment with his cricketing career, saying, “As I bid farewell to my cricketing journey, I am proud of the extensive time I spent playing for my country. I am grateful to the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and the DDCA (Delhi & District Cricket Association) for their support and to my fans for their unwavering encouragement. I choose to remember my career with happiness rather than sadness over no longer playing for my country. Playing for India remains my greatest achievement.”
During his career, Dhawan featured in 34 Test matches, 167 ODIs, and 68 T20Is for India. Notably, he made history with the fastest century on his Test debut in 2013. In Tests, he accumulated 2315 runs at an average of 40.61, including seven centuries and five fifties. In ODIs, Dhawan scored 6793 runs at an average of 45.06, with seven centuries and five fifties. In T20Is, he amassed 1759 runs at an average of 27.92 and a strike rate of 126.36.
