Season’s first floodwaters reach Mundali as Mahanadi water level rises

According to official sources, flood discharge is currently underway through 20 gates of the Hirakud Dam with 13 gates open on the left and 7 on the right. The inflow into the dam stands at 2,33,824 cusecs per second, while the outflow has reached 3,32,491 cusecs per second

Cuttack, July 8: The season’s first surge of floodwaters from the Hirakud Dam has reached Mundali in Cuttack, causing a noticeable rise in the Mahanadi River's water level.

According to official sources, flood discharge is currently underway through 20 gates of the Hirakud Dam with 13 gates open on the left and 7 on the right. The inflow into the dam stands at 2,33,824 cusecs per second, while the outflow has reached 3,32,491 cusecs per second.

Of the total discharge, 2,94,300 cusecs are being released via the spillway, and 34,956 cusecs are flowing through the power channel.

The water level at the Hirakud reservoir currently stands at 608.04 feet, with the dam's maximum water storage capacity being 630 feet. The dam is equipped with 98 gates  including 64 sluice gates and 34 crest gates to manage water flow during flood conditions.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as the water advances downstream.
