Mumbai, July 5: Educational institutions across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) will remain closed on Monday, July 6, after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert predicting heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced that all government, private and civic-run schools and colleges in Mumbai will remain shut as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students.

In its statement, the civic body said the decision was taken in view of the weather forecast and advised educational institutions to observe a holiday on Monday. However, government and private offices will continue to function as usual.

The closure extends beyond Mumbai. Thane District Collector Shrikrishnath Panchal announced that all Anganwadis, Balwadis, primary and secondary schools in the district will remain closed on July 6.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) also ordered the closure of all schools in the city due to continuous rainfall and the possibility of further heavy showers. Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil and NMMC Commissioner Kailas Shinde appealed to residents to avoid stepping outdoors unless absolutely necessary.

The NMMC also cautioned citizens against standing or parking vehicles beneath trees, citing an increase in incidents of trees collapsing due to strong winds. Residents living in buildings declared hazardous by the civic body have been advised to vacate them immediately to prevent accidents.
