Samsung Expands 'Made in India' Push with Laptops
Korean electronics major Samsung has expanded its manufacturing operations in India, officially starting the production of laptops at its large facility in Greater Noida. This move marks a significant step in the company's commitment to the 'Make in India' initiative and signals its intent to become a more serious competitor in the domestic laptop market.
Expanding a Manufacturing Hub
Samsung's Greater Noida factory, one of the first global electronics plants set up in India in 1996, is already a major hub for the company. It currently produces a wide range of products, including smartphones, feature phones, tablets, and wearables. The addition of laptops to this portfolio deepens the company's manufacturing roots in the country. The development was recently confirmed by sources after being hinted at by both the Union IT Minister and a senior Samsung executive.
Strategic Importance
This expansion is a logical next step for Samsung in India. The company already operates its second-largest mobile phone manufacturing unit globally in the country and is the second-largest exporter of handsets from India, just behind Apple. While Samsung is a dominant player in the Indian smartphone and tablet markets, it has yet to make a significant impact in the laptop segment.
By starting local production, Samsung is poised to challenge the established players in the laptop market more aggressively. This move not only strengthens its own product lineup but also provides a major boost to India's ambitions of becoming a global electronics manufacturing hub.
