Former Chief Minister Patnaik slams hockey jersey color switch

Former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik strongly condemned the decision to change the official Indian hockey team jersey from its historic blue to saffron. He described the move as an act of petty politics orchestrated by the current BJP administration in the state. Historically, Odisha stood alone to sponsor the national team when other corporate backers stepped away, helping revive the beloved game on the world stage.

Erasing Sporting Heritage

Patnaik emphasised that blue is far more than a simple fabric choice; it serves as an emotion tied deeply to India's sporting legacy. For decades, this specific shade united citizens through moments of hope, bitter defeat, and ultimate victory. Athletes wearing this uniform successfully ended a 41-year Olympic medal drought, celebrating on international podiums with the national anthem playing in the background. He noted that this colour draws direct inspiration from the chakra in India's flag, making it a universal symbol of pride. Comparing the Indian kit to the iconic stripes of Argentina and the bright yellow of Brazil, he warned that altering it destroys deeply etched collective memories.

Politics over National Games

Directing his frustration at the ruling party, Patnaik alleged this transition happened under strict pressure from the BJP government in Odisha. While officials might deny these claims, he pointed out a growing trend over the last two years where the state administration constantly repaints buses, buildings, and bridges. Now, this fixation has reached national athletics. He stated that national symbols should unite people rather than divide them. By politicising a universally loved game, he argued the ruling party has deeply offended millions of sports fans and disrespected the distinct pride with which Odisha historically supported these athletes.
