US and Saudi forces bomb Iran aligned Iraqi sites

United States and Saudi military forces conducted coordinated precision bombings in eastern Iraq on July 28, targeting Iran-backed militias. This joint military operation represents a rare and significant expansion of Saudi direct involvement against proxy groups operating on Iraqi soil. Fighter jets from both nations hit multiple logistics and weapon sites controlled by these groups. American military officials stated these actions were a direct response to over 30 aerial drone attacks orchestrated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps within a recent 72-hour window.

Those recent drone waves attempted to hit American personnel and vital Saudi energy infrastructure, though officials noted the attacks on American forces were unsuccessful. This situation highlights a persistent regional security threat. According to US Central Command, there were more than 600 attempted attacks on American citizens and facilities by these militias in Iraq between February and April 2026. Military leaders warned that these proxy groups must stop their aggression immediately to prevent further military retaliation from coalition partners.

Defending National Interests

Saudi Arabia quickly confirmed its active participation in the military response. Major General Turki Al-Maliki, serving as the official spokesperson for the Saudi Ministry of Defence, explained that their air defences successfully destroyed several drones launched from Iraqi territory. These hostile drones were attempting to strike vital petroleum facilities in the Eastern Province. He emphasized that Saudi forces carried out these targeted bombings in coordination with US Central Command to neutralize militia objectives linked directly to the cross-border strikes.

Furthermore, the spokesperson noted this defensive action was strictly taken in accordance with their right to self-defence under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. Saudi officials maintain their legitimate right to defend their capabilities and territory from unprovoked aggression, while repeatedly warning that they will respond firmly if faced with continued hostility.
