Ravenshaw University issues new safety guidelines for women following student suicide incident

In a key decision taken during a meeting of the university’s Anti-Ragging Committee on Thursday, Ravenshaw University announced that female staff members and researchers will not be allowed to remain in their offices after 5:30 PM. Exceptions will be made only in emergency situations and with prior approval from the respective departmental head.

Cuttack, July 18: In the wake of the tragic suicide of Soumyashree Bisi, a student of Fakir Mohan College in Balasore, Ravenshaw University has implemented a series of measures aimed at strengthening the safety and security of female students and staff. The incident has prompted heightened sensitivity and swift action across educational institutions in Odisha.

In a key decision taken during a meeting of the university’s Anti-Ragging Committee on Thursday, Ravenshaw University announced that female staff members and researchers will not be allowed to remain in their offices after 5:30 PM. Exceptions will be made only in emergency situations and with prior approval from the respective departmental head.

Additionally, the university has prohibited female students and staff from leaving the campus after 5:30 PM. These steps are part of an interim safety protocol to be followed strictly until a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is introduced.

To ensure effective implementation, the university has activated its Anti-Ragging Committee, Anti-Ragging Squad, and Anti-Ragging Cell. The directive has been formally issued by the Registrar of Ravenshaw University.

The Odisha government, now on high alert following the Balasore incident, has also directed educational institutions to prioritize women's safety and adopt preventive mechanisms to address harassment and mental health concerns.
