Rashtrapati Bhavan Retracts Rehearsal Announcement Ahead of Tarique Rahman Visit

Rashtrapati Bhavan abruptly withdrew its welcome notice for Tarique Rahman

Diplomatic confusion erupted on Friday afternoon after Rashtrapati Bhavan unexpectedly retracted a formal communique regarding the impending arrival of Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Officials initially released a statement around 2 PM announcing the cancellation of Saturday's customary Change of Guard ceremony. This temporary suspension was purportedly necessary to accommodate a full dress rehearsal for receiving the visiting foreign leader. However, authorities pulled down the notice within just one hour. By 3 PM, the President’s Secretariat issued a terse follow-up update clarifying that the previous press release now stood withdrawn, offering zero explanation for the abrupt reversal.

Growing Extradition Tensions

Relations between New Delhi and Dhaka remain highly sensitive following the August 2024 ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. She subsequently sought refuge in India, prompting the current Bangladesh Nationalist Party government to repeatedly demand her extradition to face legal proceedings. Dhaka established this repatriation as a core condition for normalizing bilateral engagements. Against this strained backdrop, neither the Indian Ministry of External Affairs nor the Bangladesh government had officially confirmed Rahman’s travel itinerary. Initial reports suggested a potential standalone bilateral meeting between August 23 and 25, just weeks before the September BRICS summit.

Both nations are currently navigating a delicate diplomatic phase to find acceptable middle ground. When questioned about the possible tour, foreign ministry officials declined to comment, while Bangladesh representatives maintained that no final decision existed.
