Kane Russell powers HIL GC to victory with stunning hattrick

Ranchi witnessed a masterclass in offensive hockey as HIL GC dismantled the previously unbeaten Accord Tamil Nadu Dragons with a 4-2 victory. The clash, held at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astro Turf, was defined by a clinical performance from Kane Russell, who further cemented his reputation as the most lethal striker in the Hero Hockey India League.

The match began with high energy as the Dragons tested the HIL GC defense early. Tom Craig nearly opened the scoring in the second minute, but goalkeeper James Mazarelo stood firm. However, the momentum quickly shifted. HIL GC’s persistent pressure led to a breakthrough in the 14th minute. After missing two previous attempts, Kane Russell converted a penalty corner with a thunderous strike to give his team the lead.

HIL GC didn't let up. In the second quarter, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay displayed brilliant footwork to weave through the Dragons' defense, setting up Sam Ward for a sliding finish. This two-goal cushion reflected HIL GC’s dominance in possession and tactical execution.

The Dragons attempted a comeback in the second half. Blake Govers found the back of the net in the 32nd minute via a penalty corner, briefly bringing the score to 2-1. Yet, the response from HIL GC was instantaneous. Just sixty seconds later, Russell struck again, converting his second goal from a series of penalty corners.

The final quarter belonged to Russell, who completed his third hattrick of the season in the 47th minute with a high-velocity dragflick. While Uttam Singh managed to pull one back for the Dragons late in the game, the result was never in doubt. Despite the Dragons making 30 entries into the shooting circle, the HIL GC defense remained disciplined.

With this win, HIL GC moves to the top of the table with 10 points, while the Dragons face the reality of their first defeat this season.
