Raja Festival Preparations in Odisha's Keonjhar begins with enthusiasm

Keonjhar, June 6: The grand celebrations of the Raja festival, one of Odisha's most anticipated and culturally significant events, are about to begin. This year, preparations in Uparadiha village in Ghatgaon block, are underway in full swing, marking the beginning of the major festival. The Raja festival is not just a celebration but a reflection of Odisha's rich cultural heritage and traditions.

Over the years, the festival has become a key event in Keonjhar district, and Uparadiha village has been at the center of it all. The village has been celebrating the Raja festival with immense fervor for the past 13 years as a five-day event, which contrasts with the typical three-day celebrations seen in other villages. The excitement around the festival is palpable, with the local community working tirelessly to create intricate swings to ensure the celebrations are as attractive and spectacular as ever.

This year, the village has taken the preparations to a new level, with over a hundred different types of swings being crafted. These include the traditional Pata Doli, Khayi Doli, Chakri Doli, Bamsa Doli, and more, all being made with the utmost dedication by the community members. These dolis are constructed from wood, bamboo, and other locally sourced materials. From collecting wood from nearby forests to assembling and decorating the carriages, the entire community, from children to the elderly, is involved in the preparation process.

The excitement for the festival is evident in the village. "We start the work of preparing the dolis three months before the festival. It's a tradition, and it's something that unites all of us," says Rudra Prasad Behera, a local villager. Aradhana Rana, another villager, shared, "Everyone, whether young or old, comes together to celebrate and contribute in any way they can. It strengthens the bond of unity and brotherhood in the village."

According to Divyashree Singh, “the festival provides a platform for the entire community to come together, transcending age and social differences.”The Raja festival is not just about celebrations; it fosters unity, cooperation, and mutual respect among the people," she says.

This year, the preparations are even more spectacular, with new additions like dance competitions, melodious music, and a range of other cultural performances. The Raja committee is focused on ensuring safety and security during the event, with local authorities, including the police, fire department, and health services, actively involved in overseeing the proceedings.

The event, marked by unity, cultural pride, and vibrant festivities, continues to be an important part of the cultural fabric of Odisha.
