Washington considers deploying its largest non-nuclear bomb against Iran

Washington is evaluating the deployment of its largest non-nuclear explosive against Iran. According to CNN, military planners at the Pentagon are exploring the potential use of the GBU-43/B bomb, widely known as the "Mother Of All Bombs" or MOAB. This weapon could target Iranian energy infrastructure and nuclear facilities as President Donald Trump seeks options to break a prolonged military stalemate.

Deploying this munition would represent a severe escalation in the ongoing seven-month conflict, which erupted in February. Discussions surface as diplomatic negotiations remain stalled and November midterm elections rapidly approach in the United States.

Limitations on deep targets

Despite its immense destructive capability, the MOAB might struggle to neutralize deeply buried subterranean targets. Sources familiar with Pentagon planning indicated to CNN that the weapon is not designed as a deep penetration warhead. Defense experts describe it primarily as an information operation tool optimized for extensive surface clearance.

Consequently, questions persist regarding whether a MOAB strike would alter the fundamental trajectory of the war or prevent Tehran from advancing its nuclear program. Officials in Washington and Israel maintain that their military operations aim to halt nuclear weapons development, an ambition Iran consistently denies.

Domestic pressures and exit strategies

Military officials have proposed strike packages that deliver a dramatic show of force without necessarily achieving initial operational objectives. Some insiders characterize these alternative options as a potential fireworks show, designed to offer Trump an exit strategy from an unpopular war that has significantly inflated domestic fuel prices. The conflict has already disrupted global energy markets, severely impacting international trade routes.

If authorised, this would mark only the second combat use of the MOAB. Trump previously deployed it against Islamic State tunnel networks in Afghanistan during April 2017. However, launching a similar strike in Iran carries heightened geopolitical risks, particularly concerning potential civilian casualties and the risk of failing to secure a decisive strategic victory.
