Monsoon activity across India shows an uneven spread during early August, leaving overall national rainfall below normal expectations. Data from weather agencies reveals that the nation logged 81.6 mm of rain in the first ten days of August, falling short of the standard 89.8 mm benchmark. This creates an initial nine percent deficit for the month, forcing several agricultural hubs to wait for stronger monsoon showers.

Weather System Advances Inland

Satellite imagery captured by space research officials highlights a dense cluster of storm clouds forming over eastern and central regions. This atmospheric movement stems from a newly formed low-pressure area that crossed over from maritime waters. Forecasters expect this development to bring much-needed moisture to dry regions across eastern and central belts.

Regional Rainfall Divide Widens

Recent observations show severe contrasts across different states. Capital regions like Delhi experienced heavy downpours, recording 157.4 mm against a standard target of 63.8 mm, representing a 147 percent rainfall surge. Similarly, eastern coastal belts like Odisha, West Bengal, and Bihar, along with western states like Gujarat, Kerala, and Goa, gathered healthy shower totals.

Conversely, interior parts of the country face noticeable dryness. Punjab reports a 38 percent rainfall deficit, while Maharashtra lags behind by 34 percent. Southern territories including Andhra Pradesh and Telangana recorded 28 percent lower rainfall than usual. Madhya Pradesh stands 23 percent below average, and Rajasthan faces a 20 percent gap. Mountainous zones like Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir also register lower numbers. Low-pressure systems originating in oceanic waters historically serve as the main driver of agricultural monsoon rains across eastern state corridors like Odisha and the wider Chota Nagpur plateau. As this weather disturbance progresses westward, agricultural communities in dry interior zones remain hopeful for a quick turnaround in seasonal precipitation patterns before August ends.
