Punjab Kings dominate Sunrisers Hyderabad to remain unbeaten this season
Punjab Kings chased down a formidable 220-run target to defeat Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh PCA Stadium on Saturday. This victory marks the tenth time the Punjab franchise has successfully overhauled a score exceeding 200 in tournament history.
Opening Fireworks in Mullanpur
Batting first, Sunrisers Hyderabad posted 219/6 thanks to a record-breaking start. Abhishek Sharma led the charge with a blistering 74 off just 28 deliveries, featuring eight maximums. Alongside Travis Head, he powered the visitors to 105 runs within the powerplay, a feat rarely seen even in modern T20 cricket. However, Punjab’s vice-captain Shashank Singh shifted the momentum by claiming two wickets in a single over to remove both openers.
Record-Breaking Response
Punjab’s reply was equally explosive. Young sensation Priyansh Arya matched the intensity of the opposition, reaching his half-century in a mere 16 balls. This rapid start laid the foundation for a 93-run opening stand with Prabhsimran Singh. While Shivang Kumar attempted a late comeback for Hyderabad by taking three wickets, Prabhsimran’s steady 51 kept the hosts on track.
Captain Leads from the Front
Shreyas Iyer took control of the final stages with a masterful, unbeaten 69 off 33 balls. His calculated aggression ensured that Punjab reached 223/4 with seven balls remaining. This clinical finish reflects a significant shift in Punjab’s tactical execution since moving their home base to the new New Chandigarh facility, where the surface has consistently favored high-scoring encounters.
Sunrisers Hyderabad now face a difficult path forward with three losses in four games. Conversely, the Kings sit comfortably at the top of the table, looking every bit like title contenders under Iyer's leadership.
