Bhubaneswar, Aug 28: The Satakosia Wildlife Sanctuary in in Odisha’s Angul district is again going to soon hear the echoes of Royal Bengal Tigers, which had given a see off to its lone tigress Sundari in 2018.
It was revealed, as the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) accorded permission to fetch as many as 14 big cats’ from Maharashtra’s Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) to the Satakosia Tiger Reserve (STR) on Wednesday.
Following the nod of the NTCA, the Satkosia wildlife authorities have crafted a 5-year plan in which the tigers will be translocated here in a phased manner.
With the development, PCCF (Wildlife) Susanta Nanda said,“Allowed big cats will be translocated to Satkosia in five years. Maharashtra based tigers are preferred as the big cats there are genetically related to that of Odisha forests.”
“Detailed discussions will be held with local residents and public representatives. All settlements have been evacuated from the core area. 6 villages have been vacated from the buffer area and some villages will be vacated,” he added.
However, the NTCA has also laid down some conditions for the relocation project. Tranlocation of tigers will begin for extension of the tiger project as all the conditions are effectively complied with, Nanda added.
