Political turmoil in Odisha after Bhubaneswar mob lynching, leaders demand government action

Balianta, May 8: The horrific mob lynching in Bhubaneswar’s Balianta has ignited a political storm in Odisha, with leaders from both the BJP and BJD criticizing the state government over law and order failures.

BJD MLA Arun Sahu targeted the government over the deteriorating law and order situation, saying that Odisha has now become “number one” in crime. He cited incidents of murder, rape, and kidnapping, including recent events in Hinjili, Kanas, Dhenkanal, and now Balianta, calling the latest attack “extremely gruesome.”

“This scene is heart-wrenching. Every incident is being recorded on video, yet crimes continue unrestricted. Has Odisha become like UP or Bihar? Murders are happening even in police presence, and victims are being killed after informing the police,” Sahu said, questioning the government’s sensitivity and seriousness in addressing the law and order crisis.

He further criticized the state administration, stating, “The government celebrates electoral victories, but in an unsafe state, what about the security of ordinary citizens? The government should resign if it cannot protect people.”

BJP MP Pradeep Purohit echoed the concern, describing the incident as deeply disturbing and criticizing the use of mob violence, including killings with firearms and beatings.

The state government, led by Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, has responded by ordering immediate action. Some individuals involved in the Balianta lynching have already been arrested, and authorities have promised further measures to restore law and order.
