New Delhi, August 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of India’s commitment to contributing towards a peaceful settlement of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The telephonic conversation came ahead of the planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the issue.
In a social media post, Modi said he conveyed India’s “consistent position on the need for an early and peaceful resolution” and reiterated readiness to “make every possible contribution” towards peace, while also seeking to further strengthen bilateral ties with Ukraine.
Zelenskyy, in his remarks, said he discussed “in detail” bilateral cooperation and the broader diplomatic situation, thanking Modi for his “warm words of support” for the Ukrainian people. He underlined the importance of limiting Russian energy exports, especially oil, to curb Moscow’s capacity to sustain the war.
“It is important that India supports our peace efforts and shares the position that matters concerning Ukraine must be decided with Ukraine’s participation,” Zelenskyy added, stressing that all leaders with influence over Russia should send clear signals to Moscow.
