New Delhi, June 30: On the occasion of Hul Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid heartfelt tributes to the legendary leaders of the Santhal Revolution, including Sido-Kanhu, Chand-Bhairav, and Phoolo-Jhano. Remembering their courage and sacrifice, he highlighted the immense contribution of tribal communities in the struggle against colonial oppression.
In a post on social media platform X, PM Modi wrote,
“Hul Diwas reminds us of the indomitable courage and remarkable valor of our tribal society. On this special occasion connected to the historic Santhal Revolution, I wholeheartedly pay tribute and honor to Sido-Kanhu, Chand-Bhairav, and Phoolo-Jhano, along with all those brave heroes and heroines who sacrificed their lives fighting against the atrocities of foreign rule. Their saga of bravery will continue to inspire every generation of the nation to protect the pride of the motherland.”
Hul Kranti Diwas is observed annually on June 30 to commemorate the tribal uprising against British rule. The Santhal Rebellion began on this day in 1855, when leaders Sidhu-Kanho and Chand-Bhairav mobilized nearly 50,000 tribals in Bhognadih (present-day Sahibganj, Jharkhand) to resist the exploitative money-lending practices and land settlement policies imposed by the British administration.
Meanwhile, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey sparked controversy by criticizing the Jharkhand government over alleged attacks on the descendants of Sido-Kanho during Hul Diwas events in Bhognadih. He claimed that women, children, and elderly members of the Santhal community were targeted, questioning whether this behavior honored the memory of those who laid down their lives for India’s freedom.
