PM Modi Launches 'Made in India' EV for Global Export

In a major boost for India's ambitions in green mobility and self-reliance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated two key facilities at the Suzuki Motor Plant in Gujarat. The event saw the launch of localized production for hybrid battery components and the flagging off of Maruti Suzuki's first global electric vehicle, the e-VITARA, for export to over 100 countries.

Global EV Hub for Suzuki

The flagging off of the 'Made in India' e-VITARA is a landmark moment. The battery electric vehicle (BEV) will be exported to a wide range of international markets, including Europe and Japan, positioning India as Suzuki’s global manufacturing hub for electric vehicles. This move underscores the country's growing capabilities in producing high-quality, advanced technology vehicles for the world.

Strengthening the Battery Ecosystem

Alongside the vehicle launch, the Prime Minister also inaugurated a new lithium-ion battery manufacturing facility. This plant, a joint venture between Suzuki, Toshiba, and Denso, will produce over 80% of the components required for lithium-ion batteries locally. This is a critical step in reducing India's dependence on imports for essential EV components and paves the way for the country to become an exporter of battery technology. The localized production of hybrid battery electrodes at the Suzuki plant further strengthens this ecosystem.

This major "Swadeshi push" comes at a significant time, just before new, steeper US tariffs on Indian goods are set to take effect. The inauguration of these facilities is a clear statement of India's commitment to building a robust domestic manufacturing base and becoming a leader in the global transition to sustainable transportation.
