In a post on social media platform X, PM Modi said, “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the earthquake in Afghanistan. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families in this difficult hour, and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured. India stands ready to provide all possible humanitarian aid and relief to those affected.”

Afghanistan remains highly vulnerable to earthquakes due to its position on multiple fault lines where the Indian and Eurasian plates converge. The rugged, mountainous terrain of eastern Afghanistan often triggers landslides during quakes, further complicating rescue operations.

Natural calamities have repeatedly struck the country, which is among the poorest in the world. A string of earthquakes in western Afghanistan last year killed more than 1,000 people, highlighting the nation’s fragile preparedness for such disasters.

On October 7, 2023, a powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan, followed by strong aftershocks. The Taliban government then estimated nearly 4,000 fatalities, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in the country’s recent history.
