BCCI appoints Pragyan Ojha to lead the national selection committee

Pragyan Ojha Steps Up

BCCI officials formally confirmed Pragyan Ojha as the new head of the men’s selection committee on Monday. This crucial leadership change happens directly following Ajit Agarkar’s recent departure from the post. Ojha secures the top position based on his seniority in Test cricket appearances for India. He brings significant on-field experience to the role, having represented the national squad in 24 Test matches, 18 ODIs, and six T20 internationals. During his playing days, he established himself as a reliable asset, securing 113 wickets with his left-arm spin. Shiv Sundar Das, RP Singh, and Ajay Ratra will continue serving alongside him on this critical five-member board.

Ramesh Powar returns to national duty

Former India off-spinner Ramesh Powar now occupies the final vacant spot on the selection panel. The Cricket Advisory Committee, featuring Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape, conducted thorough interviews at the board headquarters before making their unanimous recommendation. Powar offers a wealth of coaching expertise to the group. He previously guided the national women's squad to an Asia Cup victory and a Commonwealth Games silver medal. His extensive background also includes successful domestic coaching stints with Mumbai and Gujarat, plus a recent role as bowling coach at the National Centre of Excellence.

Transition following agarkar era

Indian cricket supporters watched Agarkar guide the selection team through a highly successful phase starting in July 2023. During his oversight, the national squad captured three global trophies, two regional titles, and consecutive Asian Games gold medals. The board formally expressed gratitude for his dedicated contributions. Some observers noted with interest that former opener Wasim Jaffer, who holds 31 Test caps, also submitted an application for the vacant position. Despite the stated policy leaning heavily on Test caps for determining seniority, executives finalized Ojha as the clear choice to chair the new setup.

Shaping future squads

Managing player workloads and identifying fresh domestic talent will quickly become top priorities for this restructured committee. Ojha and his colleagues now shoulder the immense responsibility of evaluating regional performances and picking highly competitive squads across all three formats. Indian cricket consistently faces a demanding international calendar filled with high-pressure series. Fans and analysts expect this newly formed and highly experienced panel to maintain the winning momentum established by their predecessors while nurturing the next generation of stars.
