Mumbai, May 12: Amid rising demands from the opposition for a special parliamentary session to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, NCP-SCP chief Sharad Pawar on Monday expressed reservations about debating such sensitive issues publicly in Parliament.

While he said he was not opposed to the idea in principle, he emphasized the need for discretion in matters of national security.

Several opposition leaders have urged the central government to convene a special session to deliberate on the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Operation Sindoor, and the announcements of a ceasefire—first made from Washington, D.C., and later echoed by both India and Pakistan.

Pawar, however, proposed an alternative approach, suggesting that a closed-door all-party meeting would be more appropriate for discussing such critical issues.

“I’m not against calling a special session of Parliament,” Pawar told ANI. “But this is a sensitive and serious matter, and it is not appropriate to discuss such issues in an open parliamentary forum. In the national interest, information of this nature should be kept confidential.”

He reiterated his preference for private deliberation: “Rather than convening a special session, it would be better if all political parties come together for a joint meeting.”

Pawar also responded to U.S. President Donald Trump's recent claim that the United States had mediated between India and Pakistan. He noted, “Until now, we have never allowed any third party to interfere in our domestic affairs. But this is the first time a U.S. President has made such a statement regarding our internal matters.”

Trump had made the remarks on May 11 via a post on his Truth Social platform, offering to mediate the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan.
