Bhubaneswar, Oct 2: Eminent neurosurgeon and Padma Shri awardee Professor Dr Ashok Kumar Mahapatra is reportedly unwell and has been shifted to AIIMS New Delhi for advanced treatment.
Dr Mahapatra had been undergoing treatment at SUM Hospital in Bhubaneswar after developing severe head pain a few days ago. He was later transferred to AIIMS New Delhi for further medical care. A team of medical specialists accompanied him during the transfer.
Senior officials of Siksha 'O' Anusandhan (SOA) University and members of his family have also been present and are consulting doctors regarding his treatment.
Dr Mahapatra is widely known for his contribution to neurosurgery and for his role in the separation surgery of conjoined twins Jaga and Kalia. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri for his distinguished contribution to the field of medicine.

He is a former Vice-Chancellor of SOA University and currently serves as its Principal Advisor. He has also served as Director of AIIMS and held key responsibilities at AIIMS in both New Delhi and Bhubaneswar.
Apart from medicine, Dr Mahapatra has remained associated with several social, cultural and spiritual organisations. He has also authored books and has frequently spoken about the connection between medicine, spirituality and human well-being.
Following news of his illness, prayers for his speedy recovery were offered by several organisations and well-wishers.
