Over 90K UG, PG seats lie vacant in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Oct 27: Over 90,000 undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) seats in the state public universities and degree colleges in Odisha lie vacant this year after admission was over.

As many as 83,953 seats have remained vacant in UG courses and over 10,000 seats in PG courses.

According to the Student Academic Management System (SAMS) data, there are 2,71,091 seats available in 1047 colleges of Odisha for admission into UG courses.

Students have taken admission in 1,87,138 seats till now and 83,953 seats have remained vacant that accounts  for 30.96 percent of the total strength.

As many as 17,213 students have taken admission in commerce stream out of 32,252 seats available.

Similarly, students have taken admission in 42,346 seats out of 74,551 in science.

Out of 1,53,054 seats in Arts stream, 1,21,009 students have taken admission.     

The state had 1,022 degree colleges with 2.51 lakh UG seats last year and this year 20,000 seats have been increased with adding of 25 institutions.

Last year, Odisha had 15,827 PG seats in 79 colleges and universities. This year, the state has 27,816 PG seats in 110 higher education institutions.
