New Delhi, May 12: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address the nation at 8 PM today, marking his first public statement since the ceasefire that followed four days of intense military engagement under Operation Sindoor.
Launched on May 7, Operation Sindoor was India’s direct military response to the gruesome terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22, where 26 people — including 24 Indian tourists, a Nepali national, and a local pony handler — were brutally killed. Reports indicate the attackers engaged in religious profiling before opening fire. The pony handler was shot while trying to shield a tourist.
A Pakistan-based proxy of the Lashkar-e-Taiba claimed responsibility for the attack. Investigations have identified three Pakistani nationals among the five terrorists involved.
In the wake of national outrage, the Indian government took swift diplomatic actions — suspending the Indus Water Treaty, revoking visas issued to Pakistani nationals, and sealing the Attari-Wagah border crossing.
On May 7, India carried out precision strikes on nine terror camps located across Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. The coordinated offensive led to the destruction of major Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed facilities and resulted in the elimination of approximately 100 terrorists. Among those neutralized were operatives involved in the 2019 Pulwama bombing and the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight IC 814.
Key figures killed in the strikes include Mudassar Khadian Khas and Khalid alias Abu Akasha of Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Mohammed Yusuf Azhar, Hafiz Mohammed Jaleel, and Mohammad Hassan Khan of Jaish-e-Mohammed. Notably, Yusuf Azhar, a key conspirator in the IC 814 hijacking, was also the brother-in-law of Jaish founder Masood Azhar.
Prime Minister Modi’s address is expected to outline the government’s position on national security, cross-border terrorism, and the future course of action in response to the latest provocations.
