Bhubaneswar, September 19: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of East Coast Railway (ECoR) has intensified its intelligence-led crackdown on the transportation of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances through the railway network under Operation NARCOS, reaffirming its commitment to the “Nasha Mukt Bharat” campaign.
As part of the intensified efforts, ECoR has inducted 18 new pups, including 15 specialised narcotics detection dogs, taking its total canine strength to 33. Of these, 20 dogs have been earmarked specifically for narcotics detection and will be deployed to assist in checking trains, platforms, luggage and parcel areas, as well as other vulnerable locations.
The newly inducted pups are scheduled to undergo specialised training from October 25, 2026, and are expected to become fully operational by March 2027.
The ECoR RPF is also strengthening its surveillance and intelligence capabilities by deploying CCTV cameras, baggage scanners, drones and advanced analytics. These measures are being complemented by coordinated intelligence sharing with the Government Railway Police (GRP), State Police and other law enforcement agencies.
During the period from January to August 2026, Operation NARCOS led to the detection of 75 cases, seizure of1,079.642 kg of ganjaand60 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup, with the seized contraband valued at approximately ₹3.60 crore.
The operation also resulted in the apprehension of 92 personsallegedly involved in drug trafficking through the railway network.
ECoR said the intensified measures are aimed at strengthening vigilance across the railway system and preventing the transportation of narcotic substances, while supporting broader efforts towards a drug-free India.
