Odisha accelerates critical mineral exploration through a strategic national partnership
Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) has officially partnered with the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) to hunt for critical minerals across the state. Officials signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Bhubaneswar today to accelerate scientific research and resource discovery. This collaboration directly supports the National Critical Mineral Mission introduced by the Government of India in early 2025. Critical minerals remain essential elements required to manufacture electric vehicle batteries, renewable energy components, and advanced defence technology. Securing these resources domestically helps India reduce its heavy reliance on expensive international imports. Establishing a secure supply network remains vital as the country transitions rapidly toward cleaner energy alternatives.
Boosting domestic resource security
Both organizations will share modern exploration technologies and technical expertise to evaluate OMC's current mining leases. Field teams will conduct joint research initiatives to locate strategic mineral reserves hidden within Odisha. Atomic Minerals Directorate, operating under the Department of Atomic Energy, brings specialized technical capabilities to this venture. Their scientists will assist local teams in adopting modern capacity-building measures. State leaders want to establish the region as a primary supply hub for high-tech manufacturing industries across India. Developing these domestic mineral value chains ensures long-term material security for strategic sectors while improving global market competitiveness.
Breaking corporate production records
OMC enters this advanced exploration phase following exceptional financial and operational results. During the 2025-26 fiscal year, the state-owned enterprise achieved its highest-ever mineral output, extracting 44.82 million tonnes of resources. Iron ore production reached an impressive 40.02 million tonnes, marking a 12.06% increase from the previous year. Mining teams also produced 2.83 million tonnes of bauxite and 1.69 million tonnes of chrome ore over the same twelve-month period. Total mineral sales crossed 42.524 million tonnes, generating unprecedented corporate revenues of ₹25,300 crore. These strong financial foundations provide OMC with the necessary capital to invest heavily in next-generation exploration technologies. Partnering with a specialized federal agency like AMD allows the state corporation to move beyond traditional iron operations and secure its position in the future-ready critical minerals sector.
