Munich event celebrates Odissi dance and rich Odia traditions
Munich recently hosted an inspiring gathering of artists and professionals dedicated to elevating Odissi dance on the global stage. Expatriates from India met in Germany to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Odisha and brainstorm innovative ways to expand its international audience. Odissi is recognized as one of the oldest surviving classical dance forms in India, traditionally rooted in sacred temple rituals of eastern India.
Prominent figures from various fields attended this unique cultural exchange. Sandhyadeepa Kar, daughter of legendary singer and Padma Shri awardee Prafulla Kar, joined the strategic discussions. Vani Madhav, an Odissi dance exponent representing Udbhav, also participated actively. She currently serves as an ICCR member and sits on the Film Censor Board of India. Key organizers included Akshat Tomar, Director of Operations for the Udbhav Sports and Cultural Association in Gwalior, alongside Europe Representative Aditya Tomar.
Promoting classical arts globally
Professional Odissi dancers Naila and Vaselina from the Bhavani Odissi Dance School in Munich brought incredible local talent to the spotlight. Automotive executives Suvendu Rath and Chidananda Panigrahi joined the artistic community to offer their strategic professional perspectives. Participants exchanged actionable ideas on connecting classical Indian traditions with new European audiences. They focused on keeping ancient heritage alive while creating fresh international opportunities for young performers.
Authentic regional cuisine
Culinary authenticity significantly enhanced the collaborative spirit. Madhusudan Patra, owner of the local Munich restaurant Dessi Tadka, prepared traditional Odia dishes for the esteemed attendees. Guests enjoyed classic regional specialties including Pakhala Bhata, Badi Chura, and distinct fish delicacies.
