Odisha Women’s Commission launches inquiry into Bhubaneswar Mob Lynching

Balianta, May 8: The Odisha State Commission for Women (OSCW) has launched a formal inquiry into the brutal mob lynching that occurred on the outskirts of the state capital.

On Friday, a high-level team led by OSCW Chairperson Shovana Mohanty visited the crime scene to assess the situation firsthand. The team conducted a detailed inspection of the site where the violence took place and later recorded statements at the residence of one of the victims. Following the visit, Mohanty assured that strict action would be taken against anyone found responsible for the incident.

“The Commission will carry out a thorough investigation based on evidence and ground realities,” Mohanty said, adding that Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has directed that no culprit will be spared.

The tragic incident unfolded on Thursday afternoon when two young men were allegedly assaulted by locals after two women accused them of attempted sexual assault following a minor motorcycle collision. Soumya Ranjan Swain, 32, a Government Railway Police constable, was beaten to death by the mob. The second victim, Om Prakash Rout, is currently receiving treatment in critical condition.

The inquiry by the OSCW seeks to ensure justice for the victims and accountability for those involved in the violence.
