As per reports, around 100–150 Kaudias from the village had gathered at Sikharpur Ghat to collect holy water to offer at a nearby Shiva temple. As part of the ritual, the two sisters entered the river for a dip, but a strong current swept them away, along with three others. The three others were rescued by fellow Kaudias, but the sisters were not saved.

After being alerted, Fire Services personnel began a search operation to trace the missing sisters.

Two teams from the Fire Services, along with one ODRAF unit, are currently involved in the rescue efforts, confirmed Jaleswar SDPO.
