Visibility to drop significantly across coastal and interior regions

Winter has tightened its grip on the state once again. The regional meteorological centre has issued a significant Odisha weather update, highlighting a dense fog warning for the next 48 hours while dry weather continues to prevail across the districts.

Dense Fog Warning Issued

According to the latest bulletin, a dense fog warning is in effect for Day 1 and Day 2 at isolated pockets in several marked districts. Commuters are advised to exercise caution during early morning hours as visibility may drop drastically.

While the warning highlights dense fog for the first two days, the forecast for Day 3 through Day 7 brings relief with no specific warnings issued. However, shallow to moderate fog remains likely in isolated pockets of districts including Jagatsinghpur, Khordha, Cuttack, Puri, and Nayagarh over the next few days.

Temperature Plummeting in Interior Odisha

Night temperatures have seen a noticeable dip, particularly in the interior regions. G. Udayagiri in the Kandhamal district emerged as the coldest spot in the state, recording a freezing lowest minimum temperature of 6.6°C.

Following closely, the district headquarters of Phulbani recorded a low of 9.5°C, keeping the region under a cold spell. In contrast, Paralakhemundi recorded the state's highest maximum temperature at 32.4°C.

Capital City Updates

For the Twin Cities, the winter chill is palpable but less severe than the interior highlands.

  • Bhubaneswar: Recorded a maximum of 31.7°C and a minimum of 16.6°C. Shallow fog was observed, reducing visibility to around 800 meters.
  • Cuttack: Registered a maximum of 28.6°C and a minimum of 14.6°C, with clear skies and nil fog reported.

Forecast for Coming Days

The IMD Bhubaneswar forecast indicates that while dry weather will prevail, the primary concern for the next 48 hours remains the reduction in visibility due to fog.

  • Day 1 & 2: Expect dense fog in isolated pockets. Shallow to moderate fog is likely in districts like Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, and Kalahandi.
  • Day 3 onwards: The intensity is expected to reduce, with no major warnings in place, though shallow fog may persist in coastal belts.

Residents in the fog-prone districts, particularly in Khordha and Paradip—where dense and moderate fog were realized in the last 24 hours—should plan their morning travel accordingly.
