Bhubaneswar, June 7: The Odisha government will construct four instream storage structures (ISS) on the Mahanadi river in Sonepur district to enhance irrigation and drinking water facilities.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi made the announcement during his visit to the district on Saturday, where he inaugurated and laid the foundation for 56 development projects worth over ₹323 crore.
“The state government will build instream storage structures at Godhaneswar, Khairamal, Harihar Jora, and Surubali in Sonepur district,” said Chief Minister Majhi, emphasizing the move as part of efforts to strengthen water infrastructure in the region.
During his visit, the Chief Minister inaugurated 11 completed projects worth ₹80 crore and laid foundation stones for 45 upcoming projects valued at ₹244 crore. These initiatives span across key sectors such as road connectivity, irrigation, bridges, and student hostels.
Reaffirming his administration’s focus on regional development, Majhi stated, “The state government is committed to the all-round development of Sonepur district. Together, we must work to make Sonepur a model district in Odisha.”
He also praised the district’s rich cultural heritage and its thriving handloom and handicrafts sector. “Sonepur has earned a special place on Odisha’s cultural and political map. The district’s traditional handloom and handicraft products continue to be a source of pride for the people of Odisha,” he added.
The Chief Minister further highlighted the achievements of the newly formed BJP-led state government, which is set to complete its first year in office on June 12.
