Bhubaneswar, Sep 23: In a significant push to promote traditional medicine, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday announced a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening Ayurveda in the state.
A key highlight of the announcement is the establishment of a new Ayurvedic college in Rairangpur, located in Mayurbhanj district, with a proposed investment of ₹85 crore.
The Chief Minister made the announcement while speaking at the state-level National Ayurveda Day celebration held in Bhubaneswar. He stated that the project would be undertaken with the support of both the central and state governments, and work on the new institution would begin this year.
Reinforcing the government’s focus on holistic healthcare, Majhi also revealed that eight new Panchakarma centres will be set up across Odisha within the year. These centres offer specialized Ayurvedic therapies designed for detoxification and rejuvenation. At present, the state has only one operational Panchakarma facility at the Kendrapara District Headquarters Hospital, while two more are under construction in Bargarh and Keonjhar.
Majhi elaborated on the existing infrastructure for traditional systems of medicine under the AYUSH framework in Odisha. Currently, the state has three government Ayurvedic colleges and four government homoeopathic colleges. Alongside these institutions is a broad network of Ayurvedic and homoeopathic hospitals that provide treatment to thousands of patients both from within the state and beyond its borders. Odisha also operates a total of 1,011 AYUSH dispensaries, comprising 620 Ayurvedic, 562 homoeopathic, and nine Unani centres, which cater to populations in both rural and urban areas.
Further strengthening the state’s healthcare system, integrated AYUSH hospitals are also being set up in Dhenkanal, Berhampur, and Balasore under the National AYUSH Mission.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling added that Ayurveda continues to play a vital role in the healthcare landscape of Odisha. He noted that more than 2.3 crore patients have received Ayurvedic treatment in the state so far this year.
