Bhubaneswar, Aug 30: The Odisha Sahitya Akademi has been functioning without the General Council for over one month following which many decisions taken by the Akademi are not being implemented.
However, it is not clear why the Akademi is delaying the formation of the General Council.
According to reports, it needs the state government's nod for the formation of a complete General Council. After 39 days of dissolving, no initiative is being taken to form a new one.
The Odisha Sahitya Akademi is an integral part of the Culture Department though it is an autonomous body.
According to its constitution, the General Council is the first administration of the Odisha Sahitya Akademi.
The General Council comprises the president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary, five members nominated by the state government, one member from each district, eight representative members of universities, eight members having contribution to Odia literature, one representative from the state museum, state archive and state archaeology department. All the members get appointed by the state government.
Representatives of the 30 districts were appointed on July 23, 2020, for a period of three years, and their tenure ended on July 22, 2023. However, the government is yet to appoint the district-level representatives of the General Council.
