Sedan beats SUVs in sales race as market trends shift

In a remarkable turn of events for the Indian automotive industry, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire has emerged as the highest-selling car between January and November 2025. This achievement is particularly striking because the current market is overwhelmingly tilted toward Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs), which now account for nearly 55% of all passenger vehicle sales.

The Lone Sedan at the Top

The Dzire's performance marks only the second time in over four decades that a sedan has led the annual sales charts. With 1,95,416 units sold so far, it stands as the only sedan in the top 10 list. This success highlights a unique consumer preference for reliable, fuel-efficient compact sedans, even as the "SUV craze" sweeps across regions like Odisha and beyond.

SUVs Maintain Overall Dominance

Despite the Dzire's individual victory, the list of the 10 largest-selling cars in India 2025 is heavily populated by SUVs. Six out of the top ten models belong to this category:

  • Hyundai Creta: Holding the second spot with 1,87,968 units.
  • Tata Nexon: Following closely with 1,81,186 units.
  • Mahindra Scorpio, Maruti Fronx, Maruti Brezza, and Tata Punch also secured their places in the elite list, proving that high ground clearance and bold styling remain top priorities for Indian buyers.

Maruti Suzuki’s Unstoppable Momentum

Maruti Suzuki continues to be the dominant force in the country, boasting six models in the top ten. Beyond the Dzire, the WagonR (1,79,663 units) and the Ertiga MPV (1,75,404 units) remain immensely popular choices for families. Meanwhile, Tata Motors maintains a strong presence with the Nexon and Punch, while Mahindra and Hyundai each contributed one powerhouse model to the rankings.
