Cuttack, May 25: In a shocking incident, a prisoner serving a life sentence at Choudwar circle Jail in Odisha’s Cuttack allegedly committed suicide.
The deceased prisoner has been identified as Bishnu Prasad Swain, a resident of Samantarapur village under Tangipada Panchayat in the district.
As per reports, Bishnu was found hanging from a mango tree inside the jail premises at around 4 PM on Saturday. Sources said he used a thin cotton towel to hang himself from the tree.
Thereafter, he was rushed to a nearby hospital where the attending doctors declared him brought dead. Subsequently, his body was sent for post-mortem.
It is worth mentioning that Bishnu was serving a life sentence in connection with a murder case. According to jail authorities, he had recently returned to prison after being granted a 10-day parole to perform his mother's funeral rituals.
The exact reason behind the suicide is still unclear.
Police and jail officials have started an investigation into the incident.
