Puri, June 8: Odisha Law and Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan on Sunday announced that liquor shops and bars will be prohibited within a two-kilometer radius of the Shree Jagannatha Temple in Puri.

This initiative is part of a broader plan to transform Puri into a "Pilgrim City" and ensure that its surroundings are aligned with the sacred atmosphere. The decision was taken to maintain the sanctity of the area, which is one of the most visited religious sites in India.

The new regulations will also see the introduction of uniformed housing with a uniform height for buildings along the prominent ‘Bada Danda’ road. Homes facing the main road will undergo aesthetic changes to fit the new design, aiming to enhance the overall look of the area.

Harichandan, confirmed that primary work has already begun for the implementation of these changes.

In view of rising Covid-19 cases, the Law Minister stated that the Rath Yatra will proceed as per the guidelines set by the Health Department.

He assured that public movement will not be restricted and emphasized that efforts will be made to prevent the spread of infection. He further mentioned that the authorities will focus on measures to control the transmission of Covid-19 during the event.
