Bhubaneswar, Ap 23: In a move to address the challenges faced by senior citizens, Odisha has launched a ‘Geriatric Caregivers Training Program’ aimed at creating trained professionals to assist the elderly, especially those living alone. With increasing numbers of elderly people leading isolated lives despite having family and assets, the state government has initiated this program to both provide employment opportunities for unemployed youth and improve elder care.
According to the 2011 census, 9.5% of the state’s population was senior citizens, approximately 39.8 lakh. Current estimates put the number at 62.69 lakh (13.8%), expected to rise to 15.8% by 2031 and reach nearly 1 crore (17%) by 2036.
The three-month training program equips youth with skills to care for elderly individuals in various capacities, including assisting with daily activities, bed care, basic medical support, wound management, hygiene, counseling, and care for conditions like dementia. Trainees also receive instruction in physiotherapy, massage, and yoga, ensuring holistic elder care.
The program is being conducted in four zones: Bhubaneswar, Rourkela, Baripada, and Berhampur, with residential training for 100 participants per batch. The initiative is estimated to cost ₹2.22 crore.
Trained caregivers can work in government and non-government organizations, hospitals, old-age homes, and home-based care services. Over 250 trainees have already been certified and employed. The program’s curriculum is approved by the National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), ensuring a standardized and professional approach to elder care.
By combining youth employment with senior citizen welfare, the program aims to create a sustainable solution that addresses the growing needs of Odisha’s aging population while empowering the next generation with meaningful work opportunities.
