Bhubaneswar, July 6: The Odisha Government on Monday reviewed flood preparedness measures in North Odisha as the water level of the Baitarani River continued to rise due to heavy rainfall in its catchment areas.
Chairing a high-level meeting at the Special Relief Commissioner’s office, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said the river was flowing below the danger mark at Anandapur and Akhuapada and that the overall flood situation remained under control.
The government reviewed vulnerable areas, evacuation plans, rescue operations, relief material availability, and deployment of emergency response teams. District administrations have been directed to stay alert and ensure swift action in case of any emergency.
Officials reported that major rivers across the state, including the Mahanadi River, are flowing below danger levels. No major loss of life or property has been reported, though some crop damage has been reported from a few areas. The Minister directed authorities to conduct immediate assessments and provide compensation to affected farmers within 24 hours of finalising damage reports.
The government has also prepared for possible post-flood health issues, with hospitals instructed to maintain adequate stocks of anti-venom. ODRAF teams remain on standby, and early warning messages are being issued in vulnerable areas.
