Bhubaneswar, Sept 11: In a move aimed at ensuring greater transparency and accountability in housing programmes, the Odisha government has decided to implement Artificial Intelligence (AI) to identify ineligible beneficiaries of both state and central housing schemes. Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Minister, Rabi Narayan Naik, made the announcement on Wednesday.
The minister revealed that AI will be utilized to monitor beneficiaries under major housing initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). The technology will help identify cases where individuals, despite already owning a pucca house or receiving benefits under other housing or Antyodaya schemes, manage to secure additional assistance. "The department has already started using AI to detect such irregularities. Although cases of beneficiaries failing to construct homes after receiving aid are rare, we are keeping a close watch," Naik told reporters.
Additionally, Naik emphasized that field officials have been instructed to ensure that all approved houses are completed within the designated timeframe. He also warned that strict action, including recovery of funds, will be taken against those found misusing the schemes.
With the introduction of AI-based monitoring, the government aims to streamline the verification process, enhance efficiency, and ensure that housing benefits reach only those families who truly deserve them. Officials hope this initiative will also bolster public trust in welfare schemes and reduce fund mismanagement.
