Bhubaneswar, August 17: Continuous heavy rainfall triggered by a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has led to flood-like conditions in several parts of Odisha. At least six districts, including Jajpur and Bhadrak, have been affected by the rising water levels.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi will conduct an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas today. He is expected to particularly inspect the situation in Jajpur and Bhadrak and assess the extent of flooding from the air.
The low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has brought heavy rainfall across the state, affecting districts including Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Keonjhar. Several villages have been affected, while large stretches of agricultural land have been submerged.
Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a Red Alert for Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak and Keonjhar for the next 24 hours. These districts are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph.
An Orange Alert has also been issued for Khordha, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda and Sambalpur. These districts are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall, along with thunderstorms and lightning.
