Odisha: Farmer trampled to death by elephant in Sundargarh

Bhubaneswar, Oct 7: In yet another instance of human –animal conflict, a 56-year-old farmer was trampled to death by an elephant in Bisra block of Odisha’s Sundargarh district in the early hours of Tuesday.

The deceased farmer has been identified as Anand Prakash Khadia, a resident of Sukuda village under Bisra block.

As per reports, Anand was attacked by a herd of wild elephants while he was relieving himself in a field near his home in the early hours of Tuesday. Upon hearing his screams, villagers rushed to the scene and attempted to drive the elephants away. Unfortunately, Anand, who was severely injured, succumbed to his injuries by the time the ambulance arrived at around 6:30 am.

Upon getting the information, police along with forest department officials arrived at the scene and seized the body. Subsequently, it was sent for post-mortem.

The incident has sparked widespread anger among the villagers, who claim that wild elephants have been regularly entering their village, damaging crops and property. They allege that the forest department has not taken sufficient action to prevent such incidents from occurring.
